Sudhir Gupta: A Life Built on Scent and Devotion

The Collector

Sudhir Gupta arrived in New York in 1992 with little more than a dream and an engineering degree. It was on Canal Street, in the modest confines of a perfume shop, that he encountered the object that would alter the course of his life: a Nina Ricci L’Air du Temps factice, adorned with frosted doves. It wasn’t just a bottle—it was a calling. That moment sparked a 30-year journey that would see Gupta rise from cleaner to curator, accumulating one of the most significant collections of factices in the world.

A Legacy Beyond Business

Never driven by commerce but by pure fascination, Gupta’s approach defies the norms of entrepreneurship. Through his company, Eau de Luxe, he built a global reputation for sourcing rare, discontinued fragrances—gaining the trust of connoisseurs, collectors, and luxury retailers around the world. Yet, while the business flourished, it was always a means to a deeper purpose.

His true legacy lies not in transactions, but in preservation: a collection of over 3,000 factices, assembled piece by piece over three decades. Each bottle speaks not only to Gupta’s unyielding passion, but to the often-overlooked artistry embedded in the fragrance world. These sculptural forms, once meant to sell scent, are now honored as cultural artifacts—testaments to design, craftsmanship, and the ephemeral allure of beauty. In elevating them, Gupta transforms a private obsession into a public gift.
